Getting in the Swing of Things

by Steve Krile

This Week

During problem of the day we worked on how many more. Our first grade friends continue to work on counting by 5’s and our seconds have started simple multiplication!

When working with your Krile kid on counting be sure you work from any number AND they can identify numbers at random.

By the end of first grade Krile kids should be telling time to the hour and half hour. Second grade friends to the five minute interval.. Read those clocks at home!!

In writer’s workshop we have started our own fancy adventures. We have characters such as Wiggly Waseem, Amazing Amelia, Awesome Aliyah and Charming Charles. Each adventure will contain seven fancy words we have learned from Nancy.

During reading workshop we read books about WILD Things, Who Lives in a Tree, a collection of barnyard animals and a HUGE dog.

Social Studies and Science

Fall, fall, fall is all over Kriletown. We made amazing scarecrows for the annex and discussed why farmers put them in the fields this time of year

We discussed fog and added the new symbol to our weather graphs.

Please say goodbye to your Krile kid outside the classroom door, let them enter and take care of unpacking for the day. We need to start practicing a bit of independence.

Thank you for all the snacks!! Keep them coming.  FYI - these kiddos LOVE fresh fruit.

Reading and Writing

This week was David Shannon. He is both the author and illustrator of his books.  We learned that David Shannon wrote his first book as a kindergarten student. His mum found it years later and a career as an author began.

In writer’s workshop this week we met with our buddies and most of us finished our first Kriletown Kreation “Who is.....?” We have all started our second book “No...” Please ask your Krile kid about each of these books. I am AMAZED at the level of excitement and dedication I have seen in these first two projects. I think we have some future authors.

Social Studies and Science

This week we talked about making good choices in school.

We discussed the difference between informing the teacher of something and tattling.

We practiced filling out bucket slips.

Welcome to KrileTown

by Steve Krile

Welcome to Kriletown!! I hope your child is excited about returning to school.  As we ease into school, here are some notes to help you become familiar with school/my procedures.

Start Up

As part of our start up, we are working on classroom procedures, routines, and classroom rules.  I am also taking the time these first weeks to assess each child individually in reading and basic math skills.  Some of the work we are doing right now is review work.   This will help me informally assess what skills your child has mastered already.

Curriculum Night

I am looking forward to meeting with you on Curriculum Night, which is scheduled for September 10th from 6:00-7:30 PM.  During this time, I will discuss in detail the first/second grade outcomes, classroom procedures, curriculum topics and expectations.  Please plan on attending.

Arrival/Dismissal

The morning bell will ring at 8:45 AM.  After 8:48 AM, your child is considered tardy.  Dismissal will be at 3:42 PM.  The children should enter each day from the outside classroom door.  They will be dismissed from this same door.  To insure your child’s safety, please let me know in writing if you change your plans for how your child will get home.  Please do not give me this information verbally.

Office Procedures/Attendance

If your child will be absent for any reason, please remember to call the school office by 9:30 AM (734/994-1807), including vacations.

If your child will be late to school, please remind him/her to stop in the office to sign in before coming to the classroom, using the inside door.  The office will call home if there is no record of your child signing in after attendance has been been taken.
